REFLECTION ON THE NEARBOUND ERA

The way we buy is changing forever

Buyers are bombarded at every turn. That’s what HubSpot’s CEO, Yamini Rangan outlined in her essay "The Age of the Connected Customer."

People are drained from endless notifications across every device and account—they filter because they have no other choice.

In fact, according to Business Insider, by the end of 2020, 65% of Google searches did not result in a click. Additionally, HubSpot reports that blog readership declined and response rates to sales outreach dropped by 40% compared to pre-pandemic levels.

Before adopting another tool or integration, connected customers are asking themselves:

  • Will this integration simplify my life enough to justify the additional setup time?

  • Will it align with my current workflows, software, and routines, or will it introduce another potential point of failure?

  • Is it worth managing another password, risking another data breach, or adding another service provider or consultant to handle it?

  • Will it pass a straightforward cost/benefit analysis in a time of budget cuts?

"More than data, you need context," Rangan says.

She adds that connection is more important than information and that community is more important than contacts.

Coming from anyone other than the CEO of HubSpot, this might just sound like a platitude. However, since taking over the company in 2021, Rangan has done an excellent job steering HubSpot from the Marketing Automation Era of the 2010s into the Nearbound Era.

As the great Jill Rowley always says, customers now expect us to show up as one. If we want to thrive in today’s market, we must partner with the platforms, companies, and networks the buyer already gleans value from.

The way to win is changing because the way we buy is changing forever.
